About Steve Shaffer
Dr. Shaffer received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering from UC Berkeley. After 23 years in the Tribology Group at Battelle Memorial Institute solving practical Tribology problems for industry and government, Steve spent 7 years as the lead Tribologist at Bruker Nano Surfaces, focusing on Applications Development.
In parallel, Steve has served the Tribology community via participation on ASTM G-02 and D-02. He is past Chairman of G-02 Committee on Wear and Erosion, and is a Fellow of ASTM. Steve has long served on the Steering Committee for the Wear of Materials Conference, and was Chairman of WOM 2009 and 2011. He is an editor for STLE’s Tribology Transactions and for ASTM’s JoTE. Steve continues to mentor students at Universities and K-12 around the US and serves as a Science Fair judge in several communities around California. Steve was recently named an STLE fellow for 2023.
Steve now runs his own consulting company and Tribology laboratory, and offers his services to the greater scientific and Tribology community.
